PROJECT TITLE:

Design and build a drinking water filtration device

  • COUNTRY OF IMPLEMENTATION:

    Ghana
    Ghana
  • SHORT PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The device is aimed to prevent the spreading of contaminated water diseases in deprived areas like Ghana or some places in India or some towns here in Iran or every other places which needs the safe water. This device filters and disinfects the water after storing it. It mainly uses solar energy as a main source and it needs minimal requirement to external energy sources; however it can use external sources of energy for starting up the process.

  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION / REMARKS:

Purpose and summary of the project proposal: The functioning of the devices is based on receiving and storing dirty water. Afterwards water is passed through ceramic filter till all the bits greater than 0.5 μ are removed and the water is transparent. This process reduces most of harmful and poisonous parameters of the original water. Series of transparent drinking bottle made of PET(POLYETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATE) are connected and aligned and water enters the first bottle and then transferred to the successive bottles thereafter. In total all 20 bottle of 1.5 L will be filled with water. These bottles in a matrix configuration are places on inclined roofs which are covered with Al foil. The whole system is placed such that its facing the sun. In two ways the water in the bottles are decontaminated. First; heating of water by the sun diminishes many microbes and germs and also UVB and UV-C rays of the sun, in addition to killing of most of the harmful microbes, will actually decontaminate the water after 6 hours. So far, according to experiments, 80% of parameters causing illness has been removed and the remaining 20% is believed not to cause life threatening illnesses and most of them are believed to be destroyed in the body. However, we expanded this design and tried to accommodate the remaining 20%. The second stage involves usage of UV lamp in order to completely decontaminate the water. The needed energy is supplied form one Solarium Cell along with Voltage regulator and a battery. When the water passes this stage, almost 98% of the harmful parameters have been removed and the water now is completely clean and drinkable. In the last stage, this water enters a prism storage cylinder which its glazing is made of glass wool and its prism has a cut which exits the warm air and thus results in cool water in the controlled processed device. In the above stages, a foreign/ external energy provider was not used and all the energy was provided from Solarium cell. we use battries to restore the energy when we dont have sun light.

Thanks for choosing Ghana as your country of implementation. I have gone through your brief and i want to assure you that Ghana is solidly behind you. I would suggest that a local member who really understands the situation on in the affected communities could be an invaluable contribution to the team eforts. With my mechanical engineering and solar applications background, I am more than willing to help you select a community and advice on its implementation.

A worthy project to comment on.

The prototype has been built and tested, so you are ready to do a bigger, pilot study. What is the next phase of your project? You are surrounded by deserts. Are there places nearby were you can test your technology? Is your local government interested in your project?

Thats Fantastic..!

i think this project is really interesting, innovative & alternative when there isn't sun light

The extra information explains how very clearly how your equipment works. Now I understand what the solar cells are for for powering the UV lamp that kills the harmful pathogens. How much water can be made with this device each day?

I salute you for aiming to provide save drinking water for the poor. Every year millions of people, particularly children, die because of polluted water. However, it is not clear from your description how your process works, whether it is really affordable by the poor and what you gonna do in case there is no sun for a couple of days. Keep up the good work.

Well done!

samira 26 May 2009
u did it!its graet to hear that someone build a device like this, yeap i think africa and some place like this contry really need it,congratulation!

Reza Enayati 25 May 2009
Its a great project..

N.K 25 May 2009
Great!Water disease is a fantastic feild that u choose, the device is usefull as u say that it uses sollar energy!

David 22 May 2009
I just say that one of the best project which has worked on this feild is yours we really hope u to win

Congratulation!

soosanalbashir 22 May 2009
i think it is good idea that use new energy for our main job same as filtering water that it is about health of people

Emad 21 May 2009
The device goal is good for those countries with contaminated water and so many villages in Iran! As description stated that, it does not need much energy and only needs solar energy which does not pollute the weather or waste other source of energies like electricity or petrol.

pamybs 21 May 2009
I think your point is very good, and you really want to help because it is true that water pollution is one of the causes of many diseases and even deaths of people.

ramin 20 May 2009
This project is one of the most usfull one in this competition because the water disease is the most reason of people die. congratulation to you!

NINICHA 20 May 2009
THIS PROJECT IS VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE THA WATER CONTAMINATED IS VERY BIG IN ALL THE WORLD. MUCH PEOPLE DEAD BECAUSE DRINK WATER CONTAMINATED. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!! VERY EXCELLENT PROJECT.

ali maracy 20 May 2009
it seems to be a good idea and I would think it would be interesting to see it in a real life senario.

Tom 20 May 2009
Thats a good idea..!

Dr. Meraj Pourhossein 19 May 2009
It is great with well design. I sure this impressive project could help to prevent waterborne disease.

Moji 19 May 2009
this project i think is one of the best projects out of 87 projects....i think from what i read this project has high standards which deserves winning this competition.

SMZ 19 May 2009
as water is the base of life, its health would be so important! this project can provide healthy water and healthy life! I think the prices can be lowered by mass production of the product!

your_samgirl 19 May 2009
I think the idea really is helpful to give good health to those who are living in the areas you mentioned. But do you think the government can provide the high expenses to sustain that kind of device every year?

armaghan 19 May 2009
its a great idea and its usefull for human`s life and for human`s treatment
