Mondialogo Engineering Award

About the Award

Engineering innovations for the challenges of the 21st century - international cooperation for global goals. The submission deadline for the teams' finalized project proposals was 30 April 2009.
The Mondialogo Engineering Award invites engineering students in developing and developed countries to form local groups and international teams to work together to develop project proposals that address the United Nations Millennium Development Goals – proposals to improve the quality of life in the developing world. Each international team should consist of two (or more) student teams. Students from 94 countries followed the invitation and registered a total of 932 project ideas resulting in a new record for the Mondialogo Engineering Award.

The Award seeks to encourage student engineers to develop project proposals, as a design exercise that addresses some of the major challenges of the 21st century. The eradication of poverty, promotion of sustainable development and responding to climate change are key concerns of the Mondialogo Engineering Award.

Participating students are asked to respond to these most pressing challenges of today’s world, and to develop engineering solutions and technologies that will help to reduce poverty and address basic needs, enhance sustainable development in such areas as water supply and sanitation, mitigate the negative impacts of climate change and adapt to changing climatic conditions

Prize money
The Mondialogo Engineering Award consists of a total amount of € 300,000 – MEA Gold Awards of € 15,000, MEA Silver Awards of € 10,000 and MEA Bronze Awards of € 5,000.

In order to handle all kinds of organizational issues in terms of your joint project, each International Project Team should appoint one member who serves as main contact person throughout the contest. This includes also the receipt and distribution of the prize money within the International Project Team. In case a team wins an award, the prize money will be transferred to the appointed contact person in charge.
Ideally the prize money is intended to be used as seed funding to help develop and implement the project idea. However, the decision on the purpose of the prize money is up to the entire team.

Over the past four years, there have been two rounds of the Mondialogo Engineering Award – in 2004/05 and 2006/07. The Mondialogo Engineering Award has inspired several thousand engineering students around the world to cooperate in international partner teams to develop project proposals, sharing their knowledge and expertise and thereby promoting intercultural dialogue between countries around the world.
